I went to Conjecture with Elena last Saturday. Its existence was news to us; she was reading Cryptonomicon on the bus and someone random accosted her to tell her about it.
It was very strange going to such a small convention -- it weirded me out especially because it felt small enough to be a private party. Large events like Comicon I'm okay with because I can get lost in the crowd, but I don't handle friendly-sized crowds very well.
I wore the neocortex shirt I had had made about a month ago, and it turned out to be a good choice; it was the first time anyone who wasn't already a friend seemed to understand it. The first five or six times, actually! The highlight was when Allison Lonsdale came up to me with words of praise I can't remember precisely, opened her binder and copied the text down, then said “I'm totally blogging this.” I note she hasn't, though. Perhaps she was irritated that I couldn't make it to her concert!
For the record, the shirt says “I am Jack's neocortex. Without me, Jack could not sustain the illusion of free will.” The usual reaction I get is a Starbucks employee saying “I don't understand your shirt,” me explaining that the neocortex is the center of consciousness in the brain, and then the Starbucks employee asking who Jack is.
