While Weighted Sixes was mostly living in one house, Matt made us a round of a beverage that consisted essentially of Jack Daniels and lemonade to demonstrate to me that not all alcoholic drinks taste like alcohol. Mine tasted like alcohol. Later on he made me a Kahlua, milk and cream concoction that tasted like milk and cream. I gathered that the lemonade thing was supposed to taste like lemonade. I also found a proportion of Malibu rum and Coca Cola that I can see myself enjoying more than plain Coca Cola depending on mood, but I think I could probably make something fairly indistinguishable using artificial coconut flavoring or some such.
So yeah, I'll allow that there are alcoholic drinks that don't taste like alcohol, but at that point, what's the point of them being alcoholic? I've no interest in getting drunk. I suppose one reason is that while there's a large homebrew community -- er, large enough that they inspired the term homebrew, I'm guessing -- and microbrew market out there for beer and such, there isn't so much interest in making new and interesting drinks which don't also happen to be alcoholic.
Jones Soda has done some good work in the field, though.
