Posted 2001-12-17 04:20:00 by Jim Crawford I think the Oracle of Seasons cartridge I just bought is a forgery. Stop grimacing at the title and look at the images. On the left and right are two reference cartridges, one of the original Tetris, and the other of Seasons's sister game, Oracle of Ages. Click on an image to see a larger version. Tetris, front Oracle of Seasons, front Oracle of Ages, front Tetris, back Oracle of Seasons, back Oracle of Ages, back In case you're not seeing this, the cartridge says “GAME.” It's hilarious. Other clues: The screw in the back is an ordinary phillips-head, whereas the official Game Boy cartridges use an odd no-indentation screw. Also, the case doesn't seem to have the snapped-off bit. What do you call that bit? I like “navel.” If noone else has a name for it, we should call it a “navel.” Every other GBC game I've seen takes the convexity and translucency of the Ages cartridge as seen above. The word “Nintendo” appears nowhere on the cartridge itself. I'm guessing this is because manufacturing molded plastic is a pretty large operation, so it has to at least have some facade of legitimacy, whereas burning (or hell, maybe flashing; I haven't opened it up) ROMs and printing labels can be done on a much smaller scale. Ok, I guess some of those clues were essentially the same thing. I'm too busy laughing at “GAME” to reorganize. [link to this] [See more on “games”]

Posted by boringguy on 2002-09-13 01:28:59 Your evidence seems pretty conclusive. But with a topic title like that, I just had to post. The additional things I noticed are admittedly less convincing, though. o The other games both have that official gold Nintendo seal. Not that the sellers would have any qualms about copying that if it were an illegitimate operation... o And the other cartridges have "Made in Japan" and the intended system name proudly displayed in at least one place. o And, uhh.. the labels on the two other games are nicely aligned almost in the center of the label space. The Oracle of Seasons label is almost flush against the left and bottom, as though a person had applied it by hand, putting it in the corner to make sure it was aligned well. But then what do I know? I've never owned a Gameboy (or similar) in my life, so I've only these three cartridges to compare.
