I miss having a cat around, not just because I like cats, but because I can use them to explain away disquieting noises I hear when I'm trying to go to sleep. Sounds like someone's walking into my room? No worries, it must be the cat. Shuffling noises in the closet? Cat. What I could do is set up a noise generator that emits horrifying sound effects at random intervals. Then, when it freaks out the guests, I can explain that that's what I have in lieu of a cat. That doesn't solve the parallel problem of disquieting images I don't-quite-see out of the corner of my eye, though.
