The Beastie Boys's Paul's Boutique has been in heavy rotation, as they say, in my personal playlist. One thing that sticks in my mind, entirely aside from its being mind-blowingly excellent, is that it came out in '89, and it sounds so... damn... current.
I have to wonder, were The Dust Brothers just so ahead of their time? Or did they shape the then-future of music? Or has rap music production just not progressed since the late 80s?
Or am I way off-base on the current sound thing? I mean, as evidenced by my having to ask this question, I'm hardly an expert on recent music history.
